NEP Highlights

  • 50% Increase In GER:
    By 2035, GER Gross Enrolment Ratio will increase to 50% from 26.3% with NEP aiming at increasing the GER. 3.5 crore new seats will be made available according to the NEP.
  • Overall Multidisciplinary Education:
    More flexible options will be available to enter and exit a course, the focus will be emphasized on vocational education, more options to choose subjects will be available, providing broad-based undergraduate education with flexibility in study plans.

The policy provides more options in choosing the subjects, including and focusing more on vocational education, and more flexibility to enter and exit the course with authorized certification. Options to choose the number of years as per their requirement ranging from 1-4 years will be available.

  • Open and Distance Learning:
    GER will be given importance by increasing Open and Distance learning. Based on credits, measures will be taken such as digital repositories, research funding, online courses, student service improvement for keeping the highest standards of education.
  • Online education and digital education:
    Continuous importance is provided in National Education Policy for the promotion of online education in the wake of the COVID outbreak to ensure the proper and best alternative of education mode to students from anywhere to anywhere.
  • 4-year under graduation program:

UGC has introduced a choice-based credit system to National Education Policy, under which students will earn credits for each course they opt for during the degree program. Academic Bank of Credit has been proposed by National Education Policy where digital credits earned by students for courses they studied will be deposited.

Designating credits to every course would mean that courses or outcomes in areas like community engagement and repair, environmental education, sciences, arithmetic, art, sports, and value-based education would shape. As a student-centric initiative, the ABC offers a learning-friendly approach that can ensure multi-disciplinary holistic education.

FAQs on NEP(National Education Policy)

  1. What is National Educational Policy (NEP)? 

It is the Educational Policy announced by The Government of India in the year 2020 and adopted by the Government of Karnataka in the year 2021. This educational policy will have a far-reaching impact on the educational scenario of India, spanning both schools as well as higher education institutions. 

     2. How would one get enrolled in higher education Institutes?

A single entrance exam would be conducted by the National Testing Agency for admission into higher education institutes in the country. The students can appear for this exam after class 12.

     3. What are the changes in the UG Courses?

The new National Education Policy is giving many options under the UG Course structure. These are:

  • Certificate after one year
  • Advanced diploma after two years
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree after three years
  • Bachelorโ€™s with research after four years

 

     4. What is multiple entries and exit for UG Course?

If a student exits from a degree at any point of time during the course, then they are not required to start from the first year of UG course again, they have the option of getting back and starting from where they left the course.

     5. What would be the size of an HEI as proposed in the NEP?

NEP says that each HEI will aim to have 3000 or more students to help build vibrant communities of scholars and peers.

     6. What will happen to the current Affiliated Colleges as the NEP starts being implemented?

The Affiliated College system will be phased out over a period of 15 years through a system of graded autonomy and empowerment of institutions. All colleges currently affiliated with a University shall attain the required benchmarks over a period of time to secure the prescribed accreditation benchmarks to eventually become autonomous degree-granting colleges.

     7. Has NEP set any GER target? If so, what is the proposed ratio?

Yes. The NEP aims to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education including vocational education to 50% by 2035.

     8. How would the structure of the undergraduate program be after the NEP is implemented?

The undergraduate degree will be of either 3 or 4-year duration with multiple exit options and appropriate certification with every stipulated exit. A student will be awarded a Certificate after completion of 1 year of study in a discipline or field including vocational and professional areas, a Diploma will be awarded after completing 2 years of study, a Bachelorโ€™s Degree will be awarded after 3-year program and Bachelor Programme in Multidisciplinary will be awarded after completing the 4-year program. The 4-year Programme may also lead to a degree โ€˜with Researchโ€™ if the student completes a rigorous research project in their major area(s) of study as specified by the HEI.9. What is the Academic Bank of Credit (ABC)?

Academic Bank of Credit is a system that would be established under NEP to digitally store the credits earned by a student from various recognized HEIs. The institution will take into account credits earned by a student while awarding. Based on the number of credits accumulated, a student would be awarded either a certificate, a diploma, or a degree.

      10. Does Teacher Education undergo any change under the NEP?

Yes. NEP proposes to overhaul Teacher Education to accomplish the desired transformation of education. As teacher education requires multidisciplinary inputs, high-quality content, as well as pedagogy, all teacher education programs, will be conducted within composite multidisciplinary institutions. The present stand-alone Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) will be converted to multidisciplinary institutions by 2030.
